I have had to do this a few times. To remove the surround for your license plate you have to remove it from the inside. First open your hatch with the window up, pop off the plastic cover, and there will be to your right the ABS equipment. Just unhook that and remove all bolts... I believe 12 in...
Yes, I have. Fit and finish is not up to factory standards. Although I doubt anyone except the most anal will ever know the difference. Hope this helps:)
No, you do not have a rear locker. In 2001 & 2002 models you have a center locking differential. This means that Off-road you will find enhanced low-traction performance available through a locking center differential and a two-speed transfer case. With the center differential lock switch...
Well, I just traded in the 4Runner on a 2008 Nissan Xterra Off-road. I know it's not a Toyota, but I still have my '02 and '96. Although I must say I am pretty impressed with the X. I was cross shopping a FJ Cruiser across the street, but a similar equipped FJ ran about $2500 more, so Xterra it is.

Question is, both the '96...
I just bought the 99, I had the brush guard, tail guards, and wheels on the 02. Since the 02 is the wife's car, I don't really trust her with not curbing the wheels. Don't worry, even though the chrome wheels look nice... they still go off road.
Here are a couple of driveway shots of the '99 and '02.
