Drive shaft noise or U joint noise (LEXUS 4/06 TSB page 18) aka Driveshaft thump/bump

Yep that's the Lexus part number I orderered from here. It worked on my 4WD V8 4Runner, but I can't remember if the V6 uses the same part#.

Drive shaft noise or U joint noise (LEXUS 4/06 TSB page 18) aka Driveshaft thump/bump

Same story with me, I took the original clunk-happy driveshaft apart, cleaned the old grease off and loaded it up with gobs of new grease. The clunk came back almost immediately. As for the Lexus replacement parts, all I swapped out was the rear propeller shaft (~7,000 miles ago) and things...

Drive shaft noise or U joint noise (LEXUS 4/06 TSB page 18) aka Driveshaft thump/bump

The new Lexus drive shaft has a grease fitting just like the old Toyota part. Looking at them side by side I couldn't see any difference between them. The machining on the splines looked just as poor as the original driveshaft. I'd like to know what's supposed to be different about the Lexus...

I'm somebody, at least I think I am... See reply #690

Drive shaft noise or U joint noise (LEXUS 4/06 TSB page 18) aka Driveshaft thump/bump

FWIW, I replaced the rear propeller shaft with the Lexus part number and I've been thump-free for the last 7,000 miles. I've also switched from Mobil1 (red) synthetic grease to Valvoline (gray) synthetic grease with moly. I plan to give the spline zerk ~10 pumps of grease at each oil change...

Anyone changed there own front Wheel Bearings on a 4th gen yet???

This may sound crazy, but have you tried rotating your tires? I had very similar symptoms to what you describe and would have bet my life that my front left wheel bearing was going bad. I rotated my tires (X pattern) and the noise completely went away. I was stunned. The tires had about...

Drive shaft noise or U joint noise (LEXUS 4/06 TSB page 18) aka Driveshaft thump/bump

I think the only TSB issued for this was specific to the Lexus GX470. Warranties for Toyotas only cover catastrophic failures. Design and manufacturing defects are the owner's problem. I'm only slightly exaggerating when I say that if the vehicle can move under its own power then...

Drive shaft noise or U joint noise (LEXUS 4/06 TSB page 18) aka Driveshaft thump/bump

I gave up trying to get the old driveshaft to stop clunking, so I just bought a whole damn new one for ~$250 and replaced it. The splines on the new shaft look as poorly machined as the old one, so I'm not sure I have a permanent fix. Hopefully I'll have TeryT's luck on this one...

tell me your avergae gas mileage- 4 x 4

If I drive with a gentle right foot my V8 4x4 gets 15 mpg in winter and 19 MPG in summer. This is actual MPG, not the 10-11% optimistic reading that's displayed on the stock MPG computer. Most of my driving is commuting to work at 75+ MPH on interstates. On a hot summer day with no wind I...

    Swaybar Bushing Upgrade

On dry relatively smooth roads my 'Runner handles great for an SUV. It's very predictable, there's nothing twitchy or funky about the way it takes hard corners. In the wet it's got a fair amount of understeer, but it has always had that. I haven't been in the snow yet but I don't imagine the...

    Swaybar Bushing Upgrade

Yeah I'm happy with my setup, the only trouble is I'm not sure how much of the improvement to attribute to the bushings and how much is the new sway bar. I'm not sure a sway bar can wear out unless the modulus of elasticity of the material changes. It's different than a spring application. At...

Anyone changed there own front Wheel Bearings on a 4th gen yet???

Thanks for the update Nuzy. NCSCOTT- Sorry to hear about your son, hopefully he makes a full recovery (both physically and emotionally). Thanks for all the info on this, when I decide to tackle my 4Runner it'll be very handy.

Anyone changed there own front Wheel Bearings on a 4th gen yet???

NCSCOTT- How'd the repair go? Hopefully well. My 04' is also needs a new front left wheel bearing, but mine's 4WD. From what you've seen in the manuals and on your 2WD, does it seem like I could avoid having a bearing pressed in if I ordered a bearing assembly? Thanks...

Please Help! CEL... Scared of Dealer!

I'm assuming you Googled this and found sites such as: Code P0011 "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1) It's a long shot but did you check your oil level? I've got the pre-VVT V8 and I don't know much about these systems so someone else will have to step...

What Mileage for Replacing Differential & Transfer Case Fluids?

I've got a reason... Oil analysis. After 4000 miles my oil is always at the low end of the allowable viscosity range. Blackstone has analyzed several samples from my engine and actually recommended sticking with the 4000 mile interval I've been running. FWIW I use Mobil1 5w-30. Recommending...
