I've only read of some buying replacement LCD screens due to this issue and painstakenly soldering them in. There is an outfit that rebuilds these HU's. Not too expensive, but generally more expensive then replacing with an aftermarket HU, if that is an option.

First try your fuses. The one that handles your illumination might be blown. If not, I would say the HU took a hit somehow. My wife's Mazda blew a relay and fried some wiring from a simple jump. Sometimes things just happen.
