A light coat of black spray paint or even plastidip on the inside of the cover will do the trick... I did this on my Jeep years ago then reversed it when I realized "why am I making my brake lights less useful?"

No, the Blue Ridge actually stays pretty out of the way, however if it was packed super full it might be an issue but there are two quick release buckles to easily remove it (for dumping into the trash at stops).
