What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today? - Vol 2

Ordered an outboard shock mount kit. And some new FJ80 rear Tokico's. On our way back form the usual summer road trip to Colorado and Utah, I felt the rear of the car getting a little bouncy. Losing both compression (I could feel it hitting the bump stop more easily and more often) and...

    Dropped Washer in Block

If it was down in the pan I'd gamble and leave it. but on a windage tray, it's not going to sit there, it's going to get flipped around as the crank spins, and that could go poorly. Yeah, it's a PITA to pull the pan, you'll need to pull the front diff and that's not fun. I did a miraculous...

    Need Rear Locker Acutator

There's a second plug with only two wires that hooks to the fork position switch, that simply indicates the position of the locker fork. I don't think it is normally used to control the actuator motor, more just to control the light on the dash. In a factory setup using the ECU, I think the...

    Need Rear Locker Acutator

A little while back I spent more time and effort diagnosing why my locker wasn't working (it would lock, but not unlock), mostly because I'd put a brand new locker harness (from body to axle) the previous year, so I knew it couldn't be that (lol). The previous year wires had broken while I...

Leaky head gasket at cylinder 5. Is this common?

30K miles? Makes it seem like something wasn't quite right with either the head or block when you did the HG last time. Or it got overheated for some other reason, which caused the HG failure. What type of HG did you use? Toyota went through at least 4 revisions on the 5VZ headgaskets...

Any regrets with Rear bumper with swingout?

4X1 bumper here as well, not a single regrets. It doesn't rattle at all ad far as I can tell. The only slight issue I've had is that I have occasionally lightly tagged the spare, and this caused it to spring forward a little and bump the hatch. There's a very slight bend where the arm touched...

    Passenger seat weight sensor?

Did you check a wiring diagram for an 01-02 4Runner? When I swapped the bottom cushions on my 99's seats, I saw the same issue - an occupant switch in the passenger seat driver, but not in the driver. Searching posts that time gave me the impression that all it did on a 99-00 4Runner was help...

What fuel injectors would you recommend?

I did try a too-cheap-to-be-tru set of $150-ish injectors on eBay a while back when one of the originals went bad. They arrived wrapped in plain plastic bags, lol. "We buy from the manufacturer in bulk so no normal packaging!". Yeah right. They did look correct even up close and in person...

    Need Rear Locker Acutator

I got an Aisin SAT009 from Rockauto a little over a year ago for mine. Looks like $395 there currently. 1999 TOYOTA 4RUNNER 3.4L V6 Differential Lock Actuator | Shop Now at RockAuto It's one of those things you need to use every so often to keep it moving and limbered up. And the housings...

1998 4Runner front brakes rotors making me crazy!!!!

Almost certainly not. It doesn't fit with some of the older OEM 3rd gen 16" wheels without spacers.

    forbidden ?

Heh, you can still post in that thread, but not see it. 'Forbidden' error on any page past 99. Someone could always just start another 'What did you do today' thread, and get the mod to unpin the dead one and pin the new one.

    What’s killing your 3rd Gen?

I doubt the aftermarket will ever start making them for 3rd gens, but you can buy dip-galvanized replacement frames for old Land Rover Series/Defenders. Like the 4Runner, they also had a boxed frame with enclosed spaces that rusted out.

    What’s killing your 3rd Gen?

Same here in Missouri, part of the salt belt. It's rust. The thing would probably last forever otherwise. But regardless of how well you wash it, repeated ongoing exposure to brine soaking into all the crevices gets to it eventually. My sills have well advanced rust. And I just noticed it...

What 33" tires do you recommend? Also what about tire load range?

They're on my wife's Azure Blue '96. E rated, so they're stiff and heavy but also far tougher sidewalls. They're a bit bigger than 33, 33.4 per the specs. She's been OK with them, but when they wear out she's says she's going back down a size to the 285/75/16's. These just rub a bit more...
