What ever happened to this car? Did it get fixed? I had this very same symptoms, it turned out that the new ignition coil i replace was the problem. Even though the ignition coil was brand new and tested good, it was faulty.

Check vacuum lines, check IAC, check AFM, check timing, Plugs and wires and check your compression.

I would assume the clutch slave/master cylinder was empty and has a leak some where in the system. A majority of the time Slave cylinder starts to leak and needs a rebuild or replacement. The spongy clutch peddle should have been the first sign to check the master cylinder for fluid.
