Frame rot? Not sure what to do.

Yep, but just laid on the ground and didn't look too closely. The undercoating made it look decent, but since the body had zero rust, I wasn't looking too closely underneath. My mom happens to have the exact same model 4R as me (even the same color, haha)- she's going to talk to her dealer and...

Frame rot? Not sure what to do.

Thanks for the link... sheds a bit of light on the situation. (I still don't feel good about my odds, but I'll see what happens.)

Frame rot? Not sure what to do.

The VT dealers I spoke to said it didn't even make sense to have it towed in. They said I needed to call Toyota cust care; when I asked Toyota about the case-by-case 4th gen frame replacements I was told there must have been some other factor involved, based on their VINs. She made it sound like...

Frame rot? Not sure what to do.

What? How did you manage to make that happen? That's really what I'm looking for, but the 2 dealers I spoke to in VT said I'd be paying for it (and it wasn't going to be $2000). Was this a long time ago when it was still under warranty?

Frame rot? Not sure what to do.

Thanks for all the ideas. I just posted a Wanted ad in the Services section of VT craigslist asking if anyone thinks they can fix it. I figured, seeing the pics might make a decision easier- it's tough to describe over the phone to a shop.

Frame rot? Not sure what to do.

Moving on is the tough part... that was pretty much my car budget. I am not doubting that's what will happen; I just can't stomach that reality at this point.

Frame rot? Not sure what to do.

I don't even know how to get past the first line of defense at Toyota. The young woman I spoke to was answering things the way she was trained, but I don't know how to speak to someone who might care. I don't really think they do care, though. From their perspective, it's an old vehicle, and...

Frame rot? Not sure what to do.

Good point. A frame swap will ultimately [probably] be too expensive (and complex). I can imagine the shop calling and saying they need this part and that part- stuff that wasn't expected. It would be different if I knew someone that could do it, but I don't.

Done. Maybe it will help future owners.

Frame rot? Not sure what to do.

Insurance isn't paying anything, because the frame rot was caused by the previous owner (essentially- I only owned it for a week). I asked Toyota for a quote for a frame swap, but I assume it will be laughable. Is a frame swap something do at a non-dealer? Edit... just did a search for frames...

Frame rot? Not sure what to do.

The owner (technically, son of the owners) doesn't answer my calls or texts now. I'm trying to find welders in VT, but it's tough being so far away from the car. I can't really afford to keep towing it from place to place. As for parting it out- I don't know how I could manage that, living in an...

Frame rot? Not sure what to do.

Yeah, I don't understand much about CarFax and why the mileage isn't showing. I called Toyota and asked about getting help on the frame, and as expected, they said "sorry, you are out of warranty". The insurance guy sent me all his pics (I posted them here). Here are the two that he thinks...

    Possible future frame service campaign

I recently bought a 4R that the previous owner had undercoating sprayed, so the frame rot is not visible. But, my control arm ripped out of the frame (at 5 mph) and a mechanic said it was due to frame rot. Problem is, I can't drive it anywhere. I could get it towed to a dealership, but I'm...

Yes. As for pics... the 4R is 350 miles away from me. But, with the undercoating, I don't think any rust is visible.

Thanks for the heads-up on that thread. As for the VT rust... I would have expected there to be rust somewhere on the body, or wheel wells, or sun roof, but I saw none. Also, I'm not sure if the guy just had it registered in VT (much cheaper than NYC) and it may have been parked in NYC. He...
