    MPG drops in cold weather

It appears my MPG drops when it turns colder out. my usual 19-20 in the summer goes down to 15-17 in cold weather. This is on a 99 v6 4runner. I've put new plugs, changed oxygen sensor of late. Are others seeing this behavior? Is there a fix? I don't spend a lot of time idling vs the summer...

    lower mpg after tuneup

Toyota's answer I called Toyota. They said they get this issue quite often and to run two full tanks of high octane fuel and that should clean it out. I've always run 87 octane. I'm on my first tank of premium. I may also try one of the purported Top Tier gasolines as they are reported to have...

    lower mpg after tuneup

Agree, it seems extreme, but our experiences are consistent. if it was a dealership, maybe you could call them and see their thoughts. I'll ask my mechanic friend as well. what else did they do to the truck... timing belt, clean throttle body, etc.. ? One might think...maybe a wire was...

    lower mpg after tuneup

other thoughts Just in case anyone was wondering: I did the following along with the spark plug change: Clean Throttle Body. I did make a mistake and instead of puttinga rag to protect the holes in the carb body, I had it too far outside, so maybe som throttle body cleaner got in there? I...

    lower mpg after tuneup

ok, I just switched to some fresh NGK's and ready to fuel up and see how the mildeage goes. I'm hoping this is it. One comment about the Bosche's though, the car idled very nicely. I don't want to blame the plugs yet, but we'll find out soon....oh the suspense...

    lower mpg after tuneup

Good question. I used 5w/30 which is what the engine says in the oil cap. I did change the trans fluid (about 5 qts of it) and NAPA said to use "Dexter".... NAPA ATF Dexron III Mercon. I questioned him on this as I heard it needed typ "IV" but he confirmed that is what it is generically. I made...

    Water4Gas

Has anyone heard of this system or tried it on their 4Runner (lookup water4gas on the internet)? I know someone who installed it on a Ford and had decent results to improve fuel economy. But I'd like more evidence and have heard that 4Runners it is more difficult to get around the computer...

    Seatbelt Return Issue? Anyone else....

Ditto, my 1999 has the same problem. Shop wants several hundred to fix it, doesn't sound worth it. I heard if you spray dry lube on the belt it will help. I tried it with some, but nominal improvment.

    lower mpg after tuneup

Thanks Chris, I'll double check it. I'll give it another week with some highway miles and see how she does. When I switch to NGK, I'll do another post here of the difference. I suspect the plugs as well.

    lower mpg after tuneup

'99 4Runner 6cylinder has 124k on it. I replaced the plugs with Bosch platinum (correct type for the engine...2 "prong"), cleaned the carb body, oil, tran fluid and air filter. Mpg has dropped 3mpg. Any ideas why? I'm suspecting plugs....anyone else experience this? I'm quite sure I put it back...
