I have two pit-mixes and don't want them gouging my bumper with their dragon claws (they don't like getting their nails trimmed) so I leave a thick blanket in the back big enough to let it dangle over bumper when I load them. It also keeps the cargo area a little cleaner with all the drool...

I think it has more to do with the 4Runner being one of the few models sold in the US that is still made in Japan. The Tacoma and Tundra are made here.

I just bought an '18 Limited and gave my wife the '17 BMW X1. Just tires alone are killing me on that darn car. 20K miles on it and it already needs new fronts and of course they are special star rated run flats. I dread the day that car comes out of warranty, will most likely trade if before...
