cold weather = extra clutch pedal pressure needed to start

Hi... to start my 1999 4Runner in cold weather, it requires extra pressure on the clutch pedal. The colder it is, the worse the problem. Today was the worst. After sitting outside all day up here in Ottawa, Canada, at -20C (which is about -4 F), I had to step on the clutch with all my...

    Braking on snow

I've never heard this.... all the measured tests I've seen show that ABS always wins. Even if you can't remember exactly where you read those test results, do you have any hints of where I could look? I'm really curious about this...

Question about more Front Seat Room

Could you post a pic of what you did? I had made some very flimsy brackets. Drove with them for a while and loved the extra leg room. But I took them out cuz I was worried about my safety (not only were they made from thin metal, I only had them on the front 2 mounting bolts... the back of...

I found the key to unlocking your 3rd Gens mileage

I'm hearing a lot about imminent charcoal canister failure... has anyone actually had that happen to them? I normally add in a good amount of gas after the first click (not sure how much, but I get it to click a few times with gas sometimes spilling out by the end of my fillup). Been doing...

    Muffler delete vs aftermarket mufflers

I put an OEM muffler on my 99 several weeks ago, after the old muffler was rotting and noisy. First time I started it, I literally thought I bought an electric car... "what's that whooshing sound? Oh, it's the fan." Love the quiet exhaust.

    satellite radio antenna

I tucked the wire behind the dashboard on the passenger side. The Sirius antenna itself sat on the dash right under the windshield, on the far right side. Wires were well hidden. Worked great... till it got stolen.

Getting That Oil Filter! Mobil One On Sale Until Tomorrow at Costco

I reach in through the tire well, so maybe you could try that next time... just have to undo one clip on a rubber splash guard and worm the filter out.

    Braking on snow

A lot of people have posted on how bad they think the ABS is... that it kicks in way too early and lengthens stopping distances. However, I drive in a lot of snow and ice up here in Ottawa, Canada, and I find the ABS on my 1999 (with snow tires) works just fine.

    More headroom

I've moved my seat an extra inch or two back to give me extra leg room. I think the seat is a bit lower, too. I've found a couple pieces of flat metal a couple of inches long, with holes drilled at each end. One hole on each is bolted using the factory seat anchors, and the seat bolts into...

    I love my '99

Just got back from a 5-ish-hour road trip, with plenty of snow (including one very steep snow-covered driveway), twists and turns, and highway driving. The 4Runner is just such a capable vehicle that handles everything so well. Confidence in the snow... a fairly quiet highway cruiser... and...

150K mile service, did I get ripped off?

Yikes.... I've owned my '99 for a little over 3 years and haven't had to spend any significant money on it. But I'm sure I'm due for something soon. I do my own oil/filter changes, but I'm not much of a mechanic. Even if I could do some of that work myself, I don't know if I could find the...

    Rust?!?!

My new (and cheap, apparently) front bumper chrome piece had rust pinholes after only a few months. A little chrome polish cleans it up, and a little WD-40 helps keep it rust-free.
