The mechanical key works on both the glove box and the doors. There is a keyhole in the door handle. From the manual: "If the electronic key battery is depleted or the entry function does not operate properly, you will need the mechanical key. (→P. 625)"

For the record, I was able to start the engine, close the door, and use the pop-out key from the fob to manually lock the door on my 2013 LE. And the engine continued to run.

When you say you can't manually lock it I'm guessing you mean by using the lock switch on the door. Can you not manually lock it with the key though?

I loosened the XREAS pump and then tightened it back down after installation. Wasn't enough play in the line for me otherwise. Passenger side pump was a bear to get to as I recall.

I got this to work on my 2013 by following the instructions on Toyota's youtube video (~1:38 mark) 2010 Toyota 4Runner: Smart Key - YouTube Basically press and hold all three buttons on the remote for 5 seconds. Hope it works for you too.

Here are pics of my install. The LE slider has two legs vs. three I see on other models - I suspect because the third leg would mount where the XREAS center control absorber assembly is. Just loosened the XREAS system, slid the plate behind the XREAS lines and then secured the gusset around them...
