    What the heck ..... ?

Also, any info on these Special Editions? I assume 1989 only? How many were made? These two were made '89/01, '89/02, 107 #'s apart. Too bad they weren't consecutive serial #'s. The dirty one is a 5 speed, the new one is an automatic. Otherwise I believe they are identical.

    What the heck ..... ?

How did I end up with two 1989 special editions? I wasn't even looking:) The dirty one in the back has been my wifes daily driver for 5 years. The shiny one I just acquired 4 days ago. Needs a head gasket likely, or maybe a timing cover. Coolant in the oil, but runs great; I drove out home...

    15mpg 22re, rough idle

Thanks guys! All sound like good ideas, I'll just work through them. I'm just kind of burnt out on the truck, spent the summer going through the whole thing and replacing lots of stuff, and some fresh perspective is, well refreshing.

    15mpg 22re, rough idle

I have finally got my 1989 4runner 22RE 'on the road'. Took it for the 1st good test run yesterday, about 170 miles. It turned out 15.7mpg. It is a 5spd. I am confident that the chassis and gearboxes, wheel bearings etc. are fine, and not causing a drag. I feel that I should have gotten better...

1st Gen Temp Gauge + Drive Shaft Issues

Pretty normal for the drive shaft to fling grease from the location you mention. There is no seal there to my knowledge. If it (the slip-yoke) is greased often or 'too' much the excess works its way out.

    A rusty and battered '89 1st gen

Yea, I might look into doing something about that A-pillar rust!. Any suggestions? Grind out the rust, bondo and paint?! Otherwise, I figure about another week and it should be 'on the road'. I took it for a good hard run a couple days ago and everything seemed fine, except the tires need to be...

    A rusty and battered '89 1st gen

I've started patching up the 'holes' (rust). Don't worry, I'm not trying to kid myself, I'm not expecting a show truck!! I really just wanted to prevent some of the road dust from getting in the cabin. Also I've never played with bondo and I figured this would be a good guinea pig. I would like...

    A rusty and battered '89 1st gen

First time I did an engine with the hood on. There was enough room. I used a gasket from a carbed manifold, and ended up sucking coolant into a cylinder. Not much, but enough to get the exhaust a little white after a minute of running. So I am waiting on an OEM gasket. The rear window works...

    A rusty and battered '89 1st gen

So I've been picking away at the 4runner all summer. The engine came out; I checked the rod bearings and didn't look so hot! I plan to rebuild this engine. In the mean time I have dropped in the engine out of my parts truck. I've also been through the suspension and steering in the front...

wow that looks great! I am trying to get up the nerve to tackle my '89. Its reading threads like this that help me learn and give me the incentive to go for it .... I've never painted before ... PS The Alaskan border is just about 30 miles from my door ...

Hi there slacker - I have had an eye on your fiberglass site. More likely be looking for a box for my '82 long box 4x4 at some point! It'll probably be 2-4 weeks of tinkering on this 4runner before I decide what is worth putting into it.
