Well after removing the exhaust camshaft(s) and winding the tension on the gears it purrs like a kitten. Thanks for the info. I hope it makes it for another 150K miles. Luther

Thanks for the reply, After reading another post, it could be the camshaft gears. I didn't use a service bolt to hold them aligned and that could be the problem. The engine runs great. Lots of power just a rough idle and the tapping at idle. I am going to remove the valve covers to see...

I also didn't use the 10 MM bolt. Since mine has a rough idle and tapping also what exactly did you do to solve the problem. Remove the valve covers and re-align the gears? Mine only has a tapping at idle speed, but it does have a rough idle. Thanks, Luther

hvguy, I had the same symptoms with a 97. I removed the heads but didn't see a problem with the gasket. I replaced the gaskets and now have noise also. It also has a rough idle. Any thoughts? Thanks Luther
