Definitely following this thread. I find myself in a very similar position, with similar driving (mostly in Northern BC) and might go the upgraded halogen route over HID should your results prove positive!

2016 Midnight black TE. Canadian spec, so equivalent to Premium down south(KDSS, softtex, moonroof, etc). $55,000 CAD out the door (~$41,000 USD) with cross bars, running boards, Toyota Start, winter wheels and tires, block heater, mats, etc. Swapping KO2s onto the trail wheels come springtime...

Mine ended up being failure with the MC itself. Sadly I was unable to find a solution outside of replacing the entire unit with a brand new one from the dealer. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news! The new unit I believe is a superseded part number, and is readily available at several dealers...
