We recently picked up a '17 4Runner to build but definitely kept our FJ.
The FJ is far better at hard wheeling mostly due to its shorter wheelbase and much steeper entry and exit angles but, the 4R is going to make a much better long distance overlander due to the increased capacity...
Once you go 'Yota, everything else pales in comparison.
236,000 on our FJ, still going strong! Probably has at least another 100,000 left on the engine.
We just did the same thing, same color even! We did keep our FJ though.
Our 4Runner is going to be going through a thorough upgrade in the coming months, videos to follow.

One option is save your money for more important things and make your own awning for <$100. The commercially made ones are cool too though.
