You're right- you won't be able to fit 16s, 17 is the smallest you can go. Personally I think it depends on your use case. I drilled the holes out with a metric 8.5mm drill bit, tapped with an M10x1.5 tap and replaced bolts with higher quality ones. Old motor oil for cutting fluid. Worked like a charm and very very easy

They are definitely getting a bit tough to find! Just picked up a 2006 Limited V8 4x4 with 160K on it, very slight surface rust on the frame for $11K- but took me a good long while to find it.
