I have better experience with others lubricants than WD-40. While WD-40 does it job it does it adequately. For door and hinges I really like the Blaster Dry Lube. You can find it at the Home Depot. Plus it also work on plastic... which is a nice addition :) http://www.pbblaster.com/products.html

Great thread :) My suggestion is to to REI and talk to one of the rep they'll load you up. REI stuff are top notch and they have very knowledgeable personnels. For basic survival all you need is fire and water. The key to survival is make it easy for others to find you... For extended survival...

Hopefully this is a one time event but may I also suggest adding a camera to your house? Since you live up stair having a camera will certainly give you an edge to be able to see who or what you are dealing with. Adding a bar to your door is also a great security measure even something simple...
