jca21, Yes 3.4 is iron block. The new V6's have a totally redesigned head. Another poster on another thread had a great link that detailed the design change. I have complete faith this new version V6 will be a ong lasting engine that Toyota is capable of making.

The service manual says to remove the front 4 oil pan bolts, because they go into the bottom of the timing chain cover. It does not say to remove the oil pan. My wife has the 4Runner at work but she will be back soon so I can look at it. If anyone has removed the heads on a 4th gen 4Runner V6...
