    Any +150K mileage 5th gens?

Agree biggcrisp, that is a very nice white 5th gen. We like them a lot actually. We are on the hunt for a low mileage '09 V8. I put in a fancy stereo with NAV and Serious/XM in our 4th gen, so we are looking for a 4th gen SR5. Plus we have two 90lb Labradors and a young boy we go camping with...

    Any +150K mileage 5th gens?

jca21, Yes 3.4 is iron block. The new V6's have a totally redesigned head. Another poster on another thread had a great link that detailed the design change. I have complete faith this new version V6 will be a ong lasting engine that Toyota is capable of making.

What a great link!! Thanks! The head is much better in this version. I like that the cams have their own housing, that sure will save labor if the heads need to come off. We were on the hunt for a 4th gen V8, but after seeing this doc, I think a 5th gen would be a consideration as well ('10...

    Any +150K mileage 5th gens?

I agree. I bought the Haynes online service manual (outstanding illustrations and directions BTW, well worth $35 bucks and far better than the print version), and I have been reading it for the last five days. This is an extensive repair job that an experienced shop and Toyota dealer quoted 26...

    Any +150K mileage 5th gens?

I laid out the problems in a previous post, and you are correct. This 1GR FE V6 does not have the longevity of past iron blocks, period. I base this opinion not on the threads in this forum..... I went to two local reputable Toyota dealers seeking advise and talking to mechanics and service...

    Any +150K mileage 5th gens?

I won't know about the condition of the heads until I get them off and the machine shop takes a look for flatness and NDT's for cracks. I see we disagree to the recent years of engine longevity, so lets leave it at that. I'm in no mood to go several pages of back and forth. Have a nice day.

    Any +150K mileage 5th gens?

I see quite a few in the 4th gen pages, and from 2 Toyota dealers (service reps and mechs) and an independent shop I trust. Engine changes, heads warping, blocks warping, the thin liners failing. This kind of thing used to NEVER happen to Toyota's, especially trucks. There are untold many of...

    Any +150K mileage 5th gens?

Looking for any +150K or at least +100K mileage 5th gens for a reliability report. We have a 165K 4th gen V6 that needs head work, and we are looking for either a V8 4th gen or maybe a 5th gen if Toyota made any engine improvements besides VVTi and power. Previous gen 4Runners are seeing 300K...

I don't think you want to put a blower on this V6. We are looking for a 4th gen with the V8 to replace our 4th gen V6 that has blown one of it's head gaskets at 165K. The repair is over $3000.... This is a common problem with the 4.0L 1GR FE V6 engine. This is the same engine as the 5th gens...

    05 V6 head gaskets

The service manual says to remove the front 4 oil pan bolts, because they go into the bottom of the timing chain cover. It does not say to remove the oil pan. My wife has the 4Runner at work but she will be back soon so I can look at it. If anyone has removed the heads on a 4th gen 4Runner V6...

    05 V6 head gaskets

MIke, I've never done anything like this before. I do, however, have a good set of tools. I used to be an aircraft mechanic, mostly on turbine engines. (broke ass airline pilot now, ha-you guys thought we were all rich I bet!) The manual says to remove the front axles too?? Very strange.....

    05 V6 head gaskets

Either head gasket failure, warped head, or cracked head. Took it to a Toyota dealer, and after discounting coils, injectors, and plugs for the random misfire codes, they borescoped the cylinders and found evidence of coolant. Initial symptoms are: Cold start yields a lumpy idle, check eng/vsc...

    05 V6 head gaskets

He did an engine change, and did not R&R the heads, but thank you. I'm going to R&R the heads. I'll document and post when I start the first week of Nov.

    05 V6 head gaskets

Thank you both! I bought the Haynes online manual, and I've been reading through it. It is excellent BTW. Color photos, very detailed instructions, a highly searchable database, I'm impressed and will proceed with full confidence in the manual. I wonder, can the lower manifold be removed with...
