My '01 SR5 4WD gets warm on long road trips. I never gave it a second thought. It does throw a P0420 every once in a while when the weather's cold, so perhaps the cats are getting too warm? I've never really been concerned about it enough to investigate.

I though of this. Perhaps along the outer edge of each side mirror? I would think it relatively simple to run another wire through to each mirror.
