I have been a tech for years. It really sound like a converter bolt came loose and is causing the rattle. the clunk would be the converter moving on the flywheel. Does not sound like an internal engine noise from what you describe.

There is a very good frame at FYC Imports in Odessa, Tx I bought one from them for my 2004 for $1000.00 and changed it out myself. Probably could have it done at a shop for 3-4 thousand and have a very good 4runner. RD

4 4runners I sold my wife's 2008 limited with 248000 miles. 2 battery, one alternator and 3 or 4 sets of tires (don't remember) Now she has a 2016 limited 4x4 that sat in the garage 5 years because she did not want to get it dirty. It now has 25000 miles or so.
