It was the TPS. Replaced and the old 4runner is sbifting great. It shorted out at about 75% throttle.

yes, new torque converter. Just checked the voltage on TT and E1 which I think is supposed to be signal from TPS, but got 0 volts. I'm not convinced I have the right terminals, because I'm not sure if I have the right manual for the 1997.

Checked.. Just getting back around to this. I checked the kick down cable. I also unplugged the wiring harness for the solenoids and I can shift through the gears with the shifter. I think my next check is the neutral safety switch.
