Yeah, I always used Google maps instead of Apple maps. No issue there. As far as steering wheel controls, I don't have the phone control buttons, but the "next", "previous", and "mode" buttons all worked with the w4400-nex.
I installed the pioneer w4400-nex last September, and I have enjoyed it so far. It has wireless car play for both Apple and Android. As an added bonus, it also has a detachable face plate for extra security. Was a big selling point for me.
Where did you mount your GPS?
For me, there is a little metal plate under the dash where the original gps sensor was stuck too. It's located behind guage cluster to the top right.
