Felpro Head Gasket Blown after 20,000 miles???

Yeah I bet you're right, should know in next several days when I get time to pull the head off. Shouldn't be hard to find. After sitting 18 hours, there was enough coolant in the cylinder to shoot 5-6 feet out of the engine when I cranked it to do the compression test I mentioned earlier...

Felpro Head Gasket Blown after 20,000 miles???

DC, are these cracks you refer to visible on the surface, or internal inside the head? What I'm hearing loudly and clearly from you guys is that it probably wasn't the gasket. That's unfortunate. I will definitely take the head to a shop again and have all this checked. Appreciate all the...

Felpro Head Gasket Blown after 20,000 miles???

No, I didn't use a tap, didn't even think of that. I do remember exerting some considerable force on those final tightenings and no particular bolt seemed to behave differently from the others. But I will definitely tap 'em this time, based on your post. Thanks!

Felpro Head Gasket Blown after 20,000 miles???

It was cylinder 4. I just did a compression test and all are normal except #4 is zero and #2, right next to it, pegged the gauge(?). I don't believe the shop did the tests you mentioned and have since just recently gone out of business. That's not a good sign...

Felpro Head Gasket Blown after 20,000 miles???

Hey, folks, on my '96 3.4L 5VZFE I've got coolant pooling up in cyl 4. It leaks in there continuously and if I don't start my 4Runner up every day it gets enough in there to lock the engine. If I pull the plug and rotate the crank coolant flies out of the hole! I just replaced both head...

Getting Ready to Replace A/C Compressor

Thanks a million! That table showing 7 oz is the first place I have seen any specific amount of oil to put in the compressor after replacing, other than to put in the same amount that was in the old compressor. One last question -- when you replace the drier, for example, do you put any oil...

Getting Ready to Replace A/C Compressor

Hey, fellows, a quick question. I am replacing my a/c compressor and the new one I procured does not have the oil installed. It came in a separate bottle, with a note directing me to install the oil in the new compressor. However, when I looked at the sticker under the hood to see how many...

    Manual Trans Gear Oil

I really appreciate this thread. I was about to change oil in all four places (diffs, xmission, xfer) and stumbled over here, wanting a quick reference to determine how much to buy for my '96 4Runner. It has 413,000 miles, and was overdue for my third or fourth change. The oil in the transfer...

    Camshaft installation 5VC-FE

Well, just got my heads back yesterday from the machine shop here in Cookeville TN. Only now have had a chance to look things over, and I'm not a happy camper. To begin with, when I dropped the heads off a week ago, I reminded the mechanic to use a service bolt in the split exhaust camshaft...

    Camshaft installation 5VC-FE

Hey, Yoda, as someone elsewhere suggested, you can use one of your valve cover bolts as the service bolt to secure the two gears. They are exactly the right size. Doing that has the added advantage of guaranteeing that you won't forget to remove it, since you will have a cover bolt missing if...

    Camshaft installation 5VC-FE

This thread is a bit old, but I'm reinstalling my camshafts after my first valve job (415,000 miles) on my '96 4Runner, which I bought new 22 years ago. I had an exhaust valve with a little piece missing from it, resulting in near zero compression in cylinder 4. It's been over 40 years since I...
