Another Strut you might want to look into is the PM3304. I am using this and they hold a full 2 gallon rotopax (mounted low) and ladder up easily (could definitely handle more weight). They also do increase how high the hatch opens which makes it easier to work under.

Did you do any prep work before plasti dip? You should wash and dry the rims. Also make sure the first layer is very light and allow for enough time to ok dry in between.
