The other day my 02 4x4 Runner just lost power while cruising down the interstate. Luckily i had my handy OBDII scanner with me and it shower the P1121 code. I cleared the code and it ran fine for a few miles until the CEL came on again and the truck had NO power.

Get a wire brush and clean that area up!! Then use the proper wrenches and sockets to take off and replace the bad parts. You don't need to mess around with your brakes!!!
Don't know about a 96 but on the 90 I had it was EZ to do away with the rear heat. Just cut the two lines under the hood going to the rear heater then plug them. I don't know your mechanical ability but you should be able to modify your rear axle for a e-locker in one weekend. I've done three...
If you are not going to use you winch then get either one. But, when you really need a winch you want one that will work!! Get a Warn!! It will cost a little more but you get what you pay for and when your STUCK no amount of money is going to get you out if you winch decides to go south...
You can go to Warn's web site and look up the price of a new motor. It may just need new solenoids, it takes 4. 200-300 bucks would be a reasonable price, its NOT junk to someone with mechanical skills!!
If your going to go off-road get a winch. I don't care what kind of tires you have, amd MT's are NOT the best, you will get stuck sooner or later. Personally I would not invest in a 'hidden' winch mount. Anyone that has done much winching will tell you that you need to SEE the winch while...
We used a ground tent for years and never had a problem with critters 'visiting' our tent. The important thing to remember is to KEEP IT ZIPPED UP!! Go in and zip it up, go out and zip it up!! No way would I want my tent on top of my truck!!
