If the fuses are good and you still have the full warranty then you're probably better off bringing it in and having them deal with it. Just make sure they don't charge you for nonsense and you'll be fine.

The process you are describing is essentially resetting all of the electronics on the hatch. This needs to be done whenever the battery is disconnected/dies. It looks like the 4Runner handled it much better. I had a guy run into my rear bumper and it only broke the reflector and damaged the bumper a little while his front end looked similar to that.

My stock radio has some similar issues in not nearly as cold temperatures. Sometimes only the steering wheel controls work; sometimes the screen doesn't work or the characters get all jumbled. I just let it freak out for a while then the next time I go to drive it seems to fix itself.

I've been wanting to do this mod on my 4Runner for a while now, especially since mine is black also. Doesn't help that people keep posting awesome pictures :/ Maybe once Winter is over.
