When my truck idles while in park I am just under 1k RPM.

Go for the 38". I picked up a used 44" Yakima that was a tad too long so I had to carefully cut 1.5" off of each side, now it works perfectly. I believe it measures like 41.5" in between the sides of the rack itself.
