How to Identify OEM vs Aftermarket CV Axles

It was purchased as a supposedly new NAPA MaxDrive axle. Cardone lifetime warranty card was inside the box. Can't remember if NAPA was even offering reman'd options at the time. Checking my maintenance log, this was back in June of 2015. A quick check of the NAPA website shows they no...

How to Identify OEM vs Aftermarket CV Axles

I don't know if the CV thread I commented in many moons ago is still around and showed up as part of the history referenced here. FWIW, visually, my 2003 V-8 OE CV was identical visually to the NAPA (Cardone) replacement. Naturally, I didn't pull the boots off of a brand new part to look at...

    Static sound coming from speakers?

Bump to see if anyone ever found a root cause. Have had this happen a few times on my '21 Nightshade. At startup just pure noise/static with volume control and power button having no effect. Power on, you can tell the selected source is still playing through the noise, power off and source is...

    Radio auto volume control

Just my .02. If you're more of an audio purist, you probably don't want to use ASL. While it does do some volume level scaling based on speed, to me it sounds like it does most of its compensation in the form of dynamic range compression/expansion. Ie. make the quieter spots in a song louder...

Experience with 2 tanks of premium

I'm not sure why some folks are finding it so hard to believe the 4Runner produces more power with higher octane fuel. It's probably true for most modern engines with an ECU that can adjust timing. It's just the reverse of a Porsche/Ferrarri/Lambo/etc. reducing timing to protect itself if you...

Car companies stand to make billions by charging you monthly fees for add-on features

You are incorrect to a large extent, unless you just enjoy trolling folks or didn't take time to do a 5 second Google search before posting. Toyota '''Reviewing''' Key Fob Remote Start Subscription Plan After Massive Blowback The 4Runner and other Toyota models suffering from this...

2021 4Runner has some serious sound insulation!

I tend to agree with you, OP. I just picked up a gently used (only 5,000 miles) '21 Nightshade AWD and was also taken with how quiet it was compared to my '03. Actually, the two other '21 Limiteds and a GX460 I tested exhibited the same low NVH. It might not show on a SPL meter, but...

    Back hatch

If the resets don't work, the next level is probably going to require going through the electrical diagrams. Based on the behavior you're describing (I've not heard this one before), I'm going to guess the tailgate circuits are connected to both constant and switched power sources. Sounds like...

    Liftgate struts

Sorry, just now seeing this. When the rain stops, I'll take a look at how things are mounted. Don't remember it being that big of a deal. Hardest part is finding a brace you trust to hold up the liftgate while you're swapping parts. Don't recall transferring any hardware from original strut...

RAM phone mount setup - driver A pillar

There is one potential downside to the Arkon/iOttie type holders...forgetting to tighten the "clamps" after dropping your phone in the holder. DAMHIK. :dammit: The reaction when your phone suddenly swan dives to the floor after forgetting to squeeze the holder closed...again.

RAM phone mount setup - driver A pillar

FWIW, I too love that location and the flexibility of the RAM mounts, but couldn't make myself like the X-grip...requires 2 handed operation to place/remove your phone. Switched to an Arkon Megagrip holder using Arkon's 25mm ball-to-dual tab adapter with the RAM arms.

I can't bust my front Axel Nut loose to change my front axel

Something sounds very wrong here. Has the nut ever been removed before? If so, could you be dealing with a crossthreaded situation? From the factory install, I removed mine with a standard 18" long 1/2" drive Harbor Freight breaker bar w/o any extra leverage added. Nearly threw myself across...

Torn CV Boots - Just replace with complete new Axle for now?

We're disagreeing on how the auto part supply chain works and whether or not one can get OEM CV axles from a non-Toyota box. :-) You're essentially arguing that Toyota had a 3rd party OEM design and create special tooling for a part used in a relatively low volume vehicle. And further, that...

Torn CV Boots - Just replace with complete new Axle for now?

We'll have to agree to disagree. Maybe something's changed since 2015 or like I said, I just got lucky with the particular box that NAPA handed me that day. The tulips and boots on the NAPA MaxDrive (new, not a reman) I purchased and replaced in 2015 were identical to the factory CV...

Torn CV Boots - Just replace with complete new Axle for now?

I'm in the camp that tends to believe there's nothing special about the factory axles vs some of the aftermarket options. Like most auto parts, I would imagine there's only a few manufacturers worldwide actually making CV axles...then they're just branded by the box they're actually put in...
