Open up the fill plug and see if there is any gear oil in there. You would be lucky if there isn't any broken teeth and it is just the bearing.

Thanks! I am thinking for my final shim purchase I will get a couple about 0.002 inches thicker than what I have now to get a better preload. Try and mash it equally on both sides.

Current Pattern I took the make up shim on the bowl side down from 0.02" to 0.016", while still using the factory shim on the lid side. Backlash = 0.007 inches. Pinion Preload = 7.5 to 8.75 in-lb. Pinion + Carrier Bearing Preload = 8.75 to 10 in-lb.

How did you get the 4.10 front diff out? Did you use the remove the front mount technique that MarkamisPrime suggested?

I didn't check the backlash yet. It is kind of a pain to set up the gauge so I was just trying to get the preload and pattern right. Now I wish I had checked it. But I agree. I will try and get it a little more inbound.
