    Rough Cold Start and Ideas

Hello all, here’s what I have going on. 97 SR5 with 227k miles on it, owned it for about a year. Recently did a full timing belt/waterpump, pulleys, VCG, plugs, wires, oil change, accessory belts, and fan clutch replacement (apx 1500 miles ago). Fast forward to the past week or so...

Motor visibly shakes when cranking at start

That’s good to know from both of you! Mounts seem fine, plus no vibration at idle or while driving really. My mind can rest at was now (at least a little, I still cannot figure what is causing a random ticking in the engine bay, but that’s for a different thread)

Motor visibly shakes when cranking at start

Hello everyone, this might just be a stupid question but the paranoia is consuming. Was double checking my cam seal plugs and half-moons on the rear of the engine today, like I do every so often since I did the repair myself. They look fine, and thats beside the point. Long story short, I...

    Engine temp following TB/WP change

Alright, new rad cap didn’t fix it (suspected). New fan clutch yesterday afternoon and double checked coolant level at the rad. Hadn’t lost any coolant, new fan clutch working great! Temps staying around 188-192 just fine now. Hoping it stays that way!

Crank no start after timing belt

I know your investigating the fuel pump rn but if you still can take a look at the crank pulley cog that the TB sits on I would look to make sure it has all the teeth on the back still. Just did this job and broke one of the teeth trying to get it off. Was going to reassemble until I realized it...

    Engine temp following TB/WP change

Hello! Last weekend I went ahead and performed some needed maintenance on my 97 SR5 that currently has 225,000 miles. Bought one of the OEM TB/WP kits and also did my VC gaskets and all that jazz too. I followed many write ups as well as Tim and Sean’s videos for both jobs and they were...

Timing belt and water pump question

Got it out! All seems well, no thread chunks or anything I can see. Plug looks clean too. Used a bit of pb blast and worked it back and forth 1/2 turns and finally it just came out like normal. Hoping the rings are fine and not the source of the oil. When I removed the old plugs from the VC I...

Timing belt and water pump question

Update to the job So moving forward from last week I went ahead and ordered the parts to replace my valve cover gaskets, half moons, cam plugs, spark plugs, spark plug wires, spark plug tube seals, PCV grommet and valve, throttle body gasket and the intake gaskets. Tear down has gone well...

Timing belt and water pump question

Cool! I’ll just buy the parts and lump the valve cover gaskets, cam plugs, and half moons into the job then. Just finished watching your VCG video just now actually! As for the 4 brass looking seals below the cams behind the third timing cover, does it look like they are leaking at all? Or is...

Timing belt and water pump question

Hey all, working on a water pump and timing belt replacement on my 97 4Runner. It’s been going pretty well, and has given me a good opportunity and easy access to clean up a lot of the gunk that’s been on it since I bought it last November. Looking at what I’m guessing are metal seals/plugs...

The 3rd Gen All Questions Allowed Thread

Condenser question Hello all! Working on a TB/WP replacement and it’s been going fine. While I was loosening the adjuster bolt for the AC pulley my wrench slipped and smacked my condenser pretty good. Attached is a pic of the fins now, should I be okay? Didn’t hear any hissing or anything like...

The 3rd Gen All Questions Allowed Thread

I haven’t since I bought it last October, I’m planning on going to my parents this weekend and my dad has a grease gun so I’ll do that then! I was curious if that could be a possibility. Could be from the front for sure or I guess the transfer case area could be making me think it’s the rear...

High pitched squeak from the rear Hello, attached are videos where you can hear the high pitched noise coming from what I can best guess in the rear of the truck. This noise only happens when moving between like 3 and 10 MPH and then it stops. Happens in R, N, and D, but like I said it goes...
