I really appreciate the replies and the insight. For reference, this belt has 66k miles on it, however it's 13yrs old. Thus far, there is no indication of any water pump issues. I posted mainly as I have no frame of reference as to what an old timing belt looks like. Perhaps it doesn't look...

anyone have any thoughts on the condition of this timing belt? Still in good shape or need to replace? thanks

my son, what seems to be a similar if not exact problem in his 1999 4runner 3.4L. Problem was it was never throwing any codes. Finally, after trying to fix the problem a few different ways, one being replacing the throttle position sensor, which didn't work...the car finally threw a code...
