Thank you for this flyinhawaiian! I had time this weekend to dissect my dashboard and after doing what you suggested, it seems my problem has been solved. The back of the speedo and the north end of the cable were covered in what looked like rust-colored paste, I can only assume it's 20 year...

If it runs and meets any inspection requirements BC has, I say leave it. Just my opinion though...

And there is a decent chance that your 4Runner will be off the road before that exhaust needs replacing. Why invest in something that will outlast your truck?

Meh...I had a 2014 Fusion with the 2.0 ecoboost and I loved it. Great mileage and stupid fast. I don't care what name they give it - it works.

And now I know what I'll be doing this weekend.

Not to sound insensitive...but if you junk it, I'm looking for a working SR5 cluster...and grille...and rear window switch...and dash pad...he list never ends.

So I just brought mine in for what sounds like the exact same problem. I drove away poorer with new wheel bearings...and the same sound. Turns out it is either my speedo cable or the cluster itself. (Toyota carries the cable, clusters are out of production/stock). Sounded like it was coming...

Same issue with my 95...have you resolved yours yet? I had the wheel bearings replaced thinking that was it and the noise is still there. Really hoping it's not a bad CV.

Um.... Is this some Mary Poppins $hit? Show us what magic can be worked on a dilapidated 4Runner, and then just move on? Maybe he was needed in the world of Land Rovers..... Seriously, hope he's ok. This thread has been massively educational and inspirational.
