Toyota sells more than 100,000 4Runners per year, generating $4B+ in annual revenue. There is no way they are going to abandon that revenue stream. The 4R will continue as a mid sized BOF SUV, with a redesign similar to the Taco.

Follow up - Turns out I had to replace the license plate bezel, as the plastic pieces the lock cylinder screw into on the bezel had broken. If your the lock cylinder moves around, you may have the same issue. here is a thread on how to replace the bezel. Replacing rear license plate bezel

Don't sand it down. It should fit together properly. I had the same issue, but years ago. If I recall correctly, part of the original bushing was still seated and didn't come out. Once I fully removed the old, the new bushing fit correctly. Make sure that is not your issue.
