Thanks for the reply, gaz. I think I just have to bite the bullet and remove the starter, give it a once over and decide how to proceed. Wonder if there is any way to tell the date of manufacture of the starter? I'd hate to replace the contacts and have the starter fail six months later...

My '98 has not been spinning over immediately when turning the key. Sometimes it will take a half second or so, sometimes a couple seconds. Started this problem a few months back so I replaced the battery since the terminals were badly corroded, and have been for a couple years. Got new cable...

On mine it's the parking brake releasing. Does it every time the truck sits for a while with the parking brake on. It only does it in reverse and only when the truck has been sitting for a while with the parking brake on. If I don't set the brake then there is no hesitation or ka-chunk noise...
