Thanks for the advice, everyone. I did run a Carfax report last night, and it spent 14 years in Pennsylvania. Down here we don't see much rust (more paint peel on roof and hood). So it was a bit shocking to see that level of rust.
I think I'll skip this one and keep looking. Happy New Year all.
Is this a southeast 4Runner?
I emailed a guy about a 3rd gen today. He sent the attached pictures. A couple of quick questions:
1. Is this a southern car, or does it look like it's been up north in the salt?
2. Is there enough rust to be worried about it?

Good point about the oil contamination. I'd be happy to find a used engine and do a swap, but just don't have the time. And you are probably right on the heads and my mechanic. I kinda got the feeling he may not have wanted to project. Thanks again.
