Plasti-dip “bonds” to chrome without being sanded. It’s designed to be sprayed over chrome as-is. And the beauty of plasti dip is you peel off the “mess” from the surrounding area. If my wife lets me I’ll do it to ours, but I doubt it. Not for a couple years at least, lol. ——— 2015 4Runner...

I would suggest Plasti-dip. I did the same thing on my Xterra a few years back and it held up fine for years, and much cheaper! I might have a picture of it somewhere... You could either tape around it with painters tape or cut a circle out in some cardboard and use that to catch the overspray...
