While I love working on my cars/trucks oil change is something I rather have the garage do simply because I don't want a mess in my garage and the price is not that much more expensive

I second the screwdriver thing.. worked well for me (and some elbow grease and lots of f-bombs)

No compression needed, I put the rear on jack stands and then used the jack to jack the opposite side to let the other side drop more (ie, I jacked the right side so the left side would drop) after a bit the springs just came out. AS mentioned watch the brake lines

Had a similar problem with my Accord back in the day. After bleeding and making sure my master or slave cylinder wasn't leaking it all came back to normal. I suppose it's the same for 4runners.
