$2000 for a transmission replacement? No, you can find used ones for a couple hundred bucks on CL. The gears in a manual transmission "mesh" together. So you either have a working gear or you don't. Only part that could be slipping in OP's case would be the clutch. I too believe you're talking...

Given it's all going to be taken apart to replace the clutch... I would also replace: - Throwout bearing - Pilot Bearing - Front seal on the transmission (mid as well since it's apart) - Have the flywheel machined - Clutch fluid The clutch master and slave cylinders can always been replaced...

Wouldn't adding paint to it make it heavier; which in turn, would make it slower?
