Thank you for all the help. As it turns out the bolt is too loose. I talked the repair shop into loctite ing it and cranking it down. It works for now. Not sure how long it will last. So far after 200 miles still good.

Planning to stop by the shop that did the work tomorrow. I'm not that optimistic the will make the necessary repairs, for free.
What I am wondering is why someone has come up with a fix for this problem? Other than a rebuild. From the links others have left, this appears not...

We put in a new crank sensor. Didn't help.
Funny you should ask, but yes, yes I did have timing belt and water pump replaced recently. About a month ago.
I have a 1997 sr5 4runner. The other day coming off the freeway it stopped and wouldn't restart.Parked it and walked home. Came back with a few tools. It started up but as soon as put in gear it died. Could restart but would die as soon as put in gear.
