Return to former glory (mostly) much to my wife’s chagrin. Pictures didn’t order the way I wanted but you have the before, the journey, the current, and the damage.

Need a few off the pavement. Finally painted the bumper and the fender flares. Need to figure out what to do with the front flares with these older SR5s. I hate how they end abruptly and do not go the length of the wheel well.

Progress Swapped the ‘97 headlights for some 99’s. Mounted the new bumper as well. Now for the powder coat.

Of course I could have. With parts and labor I was looking at 4-5k and basically would have rebuilt the top half of the engine with the bottom half having 311k on it. Likely I'm in there in another year rebuilding the bottom half and at that point I would have spend more. I didn't choose it...

sleepydad - it's going to run me $9200. Believe me I weighed the options. There was no cheap option and I like the idea of keeping things as original as possible under the hood. Just my preference.

sleepydad - yes Toyota is now offering a crate engine program. They started the program about two months ago and are only offering it for certain models. Lucky for us the engine in a 3rd gen 4runner is one of them. They offer a 3 year warranty and unlimited miles. It's not cheap but if your into...

Update: shortly after posting this, found out I have a cracked cylinder head. No real surprise with 311k on the original motor. After debating, I'm dropping in a brand new OEM engine. I guess it's some new program Toyota is doing where they manufacture old engines brand new for certain...
