For your old one as backup, do yourself a favor and remove the brushes for inspection. They're probably almost completely gone, and replacing them takes 5 minutes once you have the alternator out, and $20.00 for the part.

Agree with Mike on alternator brushes. A replacement set is $25 and will last another 180k miles. Very simple to replace once the alternator is in your hands. This has become a pre-200k maintenance item for me.

I don't know. The only one I did was my 2001 and didn't run into that problem. There's probably a trick or work-around somewhere.

In the crank photo, the belt is loose. You did tension it after the photo, I assume?

No idea what that is, but do you also have two bolts lying around that went into those holes? Maybe with washers?

Could be neutral safety switch (position sensor) on the transmission. Do you see the "D" indicated on the dash when the gear selector is in Drive?

What does Oregon do in the cases of non-compliance? I would think nothing, unless you visited the state again.

Before you put a lot of importance on the 3-year warranty, I'd look closely at it. Are all the idlers and other pieces included? What does a warranty replacement involve? Where do parts ship from? Is the labor covered, too? What about engine damage caused by the device? Is the warranty...

Many people avoid this, but if it is a Toyota part, the parts guy at your dealership may be able to locate it with dimensions and thread specs. Maybe stop by with the bolt so he can look at it.
