No. The vehicles have exploding airbags. It is not extreme to ask for a rental. Toyota is actively giving folks rentals because people have died as a result of their products. But, you are partially right; there are no guarantees the next vehicle's airbag won't go off like a hand grenade in...
I have a 2010 with open recall for a year. Was told to pound sand on a rental that would be able to town my small trailer, but they did offer to give me a minivan.

I'm very curious as well. I've been waiting for a solution to the airbag recall for months. Toyota refuses to provide a rental that can tow my trailer. "We can get you a minivan!" No. In the meantime, the front passenger seat remains vacant.
