I'm pretty sure the outer shafts of the front CVs hold the wheel bearings together.... You could disassemble and take out the physical half shaft, but you definitely need the outer stub

I had the same issue, even with SS lines. My solution was to run it under the back of a Dodge Ram 2500 and buy a GX470, which oddly doesn't have the issue. Your results may vary.
