    Power antenna fix with pic's

On a 98 runner, when installing the new mast the rack teeth must face the front of the car. It won't hurt to try it the other way, but it just won't go in. I got a genuine toyota mast on amazon for ~$35, half the dealer quoted price.

    Knocking noise when in gear

Mine turned out to be the torque converter. The noise was a very random metallic rap, noisiest with the truck idling & in gear. I posted an audio file at the link below. When I dropped the trans pan there was a good qty of metal paste coating everything. One possible cause is a clogged or...

    Knocking noise when in gear

I have a noise on a 98 for the same conditions so I am interested in what you find. Mine is a random metal rapping noise only while in gear and sounds like some small part has come loose internally. I was able to record it using an mp3 player.

adding a remote and getting at the ecu

Yes, if you saw post #21 you see I did find it. For future reference, the ECM or 'Engine Control Module' reads the oxygen and temperature sensors and controls the fuel injection, idle speed, etc. You would only mess with it if you had engine problems. The box is silver metal about 1" thick and...

adding a remote and getting at the ecu

Success! I traced the piezo wires to the firewall and back down to the driver kick panel. I could see they spiced into the bundle running along the door and to the seat. I found the RS3000 ECU UNDERNEATH the carpet under the seat. I guess I should have felt around for the 'bump'. The correct...

adding a remote and getting at the ecu

Just for the record, on this vehicle the passenger kick panel covers the ABS ECU. I did remove the under dash trim and I can see the wires leading to both the security light and glass break module. They are zip-tied onto another harness. These wires seem to go up under the dash to the left. Not...

adding a remote and getting at the ecu

The step that some leave out is whether you cycle the key on to off only once, or do you do it twice. Once is just to add a fob, twice is to re-write over what was stored. Both should work. I tried both ways and I just don't get any response (locks cycle on and off automatically). I stopped...

adding a remote and getting at the ecu

The driver side kick panel does have two ECU boxes one green and one black, but both are marked for 4wheel drive.

There is definitely a black box of some kind behind the kick panel. I'll check it tomorrow.

adding a remote and getting at the ecu

I looked again under both seats - nothing but seat motors, and something like an air vent under the passenger seat. I did find the glass breakage sensor up under the dash. Kinda looks like the RS3000 but isnt. Electrical diagrams would help to locate it since it has to tie into the horn, lights...

adding a remote and getting at the ecu

So its not actually attached to the seat at all, its on the floor under the seat?

adding a remote and getting at the ecu

Well that clears up one thing - this picture is definitely not the ECM I have been talking about. This plastic box looks no bigger than 3"x3" and looks like it has only one connector. When you look under the seat is this thing obvious or is it tucked way up under there?

adding a remote and getting at the ecu

Yes, I have the Toyota Security light. I only see the seat motor under the drivers seat. How big is this box anyway? Is it plastic or metal? Is this the main engine computer (ECM) on your car or is it something else? On my car, you can see a little of the ECM just above the top back edge of the...

adding a remote and getting at the ecu

When you pull the glove box, you can see the end of the ECM, which covered with connectors and wire harness. There is no button. It is similar looking to the RS3000 picture - an aluminum box about 1.5" x 5" x 7" or so looking at the end - but that was just a drawing anyway, so I'm not sure how...
