I have not done wheel well mods yet, but my metal thing with all the cutouts, semi-clear see thru plates, with an additional rack on top does seem to gather mud, dust or dirt everywhere whenever it sees the non paved roads and trails.

Winter weather I use the steel cable. The synthetic rope could collect water and freeze, rendering the winch useless until thawed out. We live in the mountains and collect snow and ice during the winter months.
