You can mix conventional with synthetic. Just follow the service life of conventional till you get 100% synthetic in there. The best route would be to drain all the conventional out and replace with all synthetic.

Started using Amsoil 15 years ago... Been using Amsoil for 8 years now in my 4Runner, 15K or 1 year OCI.

3 qts is when you drop/drain the pan and change out the fluid in the pan only. There is still fluid up in the transmission and torque converter that doesn't get changed out when you drop/drain the pan.

You can use the "LS" in a non-LS diff. The LS has some additives/friction modifiers to reduce chatter in an LS diff. Here is a recent post from a member that ran oil analysis so you can see what they look at. There are many different companies that can perform this. I use Oil Analyzers Inc through Amsoil. Cost is $29 w/TBN, prepaid shipping included. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/2145166-post810.html

You can use 5W-40 and shouldn't see any issues. I usually recommend just sticking with a 5W-30 like Toyota recommends. If you're in a climate that never sees freezing conditions, a 10W-30 will work also. As long as your coolant system is up to par, it will keep your 4Runner at proper operating...

indawire, I agree with Billf6531. You may want to look into running an engine flush treatment before switching over to synthetic. The extra detergents will help flush out and sludge/depostis that could be left behind from running dino oil. Not 100% necessary, but just a suggestion. Synthetic oil...
