Rear Axle Seals: The Ultimate Information and Replacement Thread (3rd gen)

Not sure how I missed that one, I see that now. Good to know for future reference. I think i went with the cheapest one cause i wasn't sure if it was going to work at all. I didnt want to be out too much and i wasn't worried about modifying it. Thanks for the heads up.

    Recurring Axle Seal Leak

Yeah I've actually modified mine and all is clear. Good advice though. My seal was riding on bevel part on the retainer. I flipped the retainer and used FIPG on the retainer and seal. Did the sharpe test and mine isnt exactly riding in the middle of the retainer but I think it will be enough...

Rear Axle Seals: The Ultimate Information and Replacement Thread (3rd gen)

I wanted to update my situation and answer my own question so others know. I bought the bearing puller on ebay and this tool wont work with a 12 ton harbor freight press unless you modify it a little bit which wasn't a big deal. The reason it will not work is the space between the crossmember...

    Recurring Axle Seal Leak

Is it safe to assume the only difference in abs and non-abs axles is the abs uses two retainer instead of one for non-abs? I'm looking at this kit and the non-abs only has one retainer in it. I was hoping I could reuse one of the retainers closest to the bearing and use a new retainer on the...

    Recurring Axle Seal Leak

    Recurring Axle Seal Leak

Sounds good. Thanks for the input. Now I just need to see if my 12 ton harbor freight is up to the task.

Rear Axle Seals: The Ultimate Information and Replacement Thread (3rd gen)

It seems most people are using the harbor freight 20 ton press to replace the bearing and retainers. I picked up a harbor freight 12 ton at a yard sale for 20 bucks since I've always wanted a press at home. A month later I have a leaky axle so I thought this would be a perfect time to use the...

    Recurring Axle Seal Leak

Of all the people that have used FIPG (RTV) to seal any chance of it leaking, how many are still experiencing issues? How many of you guys have flipped the retainer and have gone 10k+ miles with the flip and not experiencing a leak? I'm getting sick of this problem. Is it still best to go with...

4.56 gears better than 4.88 if used a lot on the freeway?

I wouldnt be too concerned about the higher rpm in 3rd gear for shorter period of times. It's not going to make much of a difference on wear. These engines can easily take it. I'm pretty sure I would have been disappointed with 4.56 gears. I was in the same situation when upgrading gears...

4.56 gears better than 4.88 if used a lot on the freeway?

I went through this exact situation a couple years ago. I have added weight, winch, sliders, rack, skids. Hills or a head wind would kill any power I had. I too would travel 2-4 hours on highway to get to trails and camping. I started out with 255/85/16 and now I'm at 285/75/16. I decided...

    Bilstein 5160: Tundra vs 3rd gen 4runner

I scratched the idea for now. This year hasn't been the best for doing upgrades. Current setup works for now and I'll revisit this when the need is there. I never ended up measuring the shocks either.

Nitro Gears 29 Spline Pinion Seal and Nut

I know this is a bit of a late response, but since I wasn't mentioned or quoted, I couldn't see it unless I looked at this thread. When I changed my gears, i also bought a master install kit which replaced all the bearings. I didnt do the install myself so I cant say for sure what the...

TBU Wheel grind probs? Done it?

I did it to 2 different 3rd gens and didnt notice any balancing issues. Have over 20k miles on 1 of the runners. I'm not saying to do it or not, but I did it and havent experienced any negative effects. That's a small sample size. To comment on the TBU, I was cooking my brakes and warping...

    255 85 r16 q&a

I'm right there with you, would love KO2 in a 255. Cant even get a KO2 in load C or D in a 285/75/16. I'm currently running the KM2 in the 255/85/16 and love the size, but I dont need muds and want to switch to AT tire.
