I've done so in a Land Cruiser (40, 80, and 100 series), Tacoma, Corolla (wagon and sedan), Volvo (wagon and sedan, 240 and 740), Accord, Excursion just to name a few but never in a 4Runner!
I have the same gen, currently trying to decide how much I want to invest in it. Pretty much same story as yours history wise and always in the family. I would need to spend a solid $1,000 on it to get it where I want it as well as a few weeks of wrenching which is the bigger issue for me...
I'm not much of a video game guy but I'm also 50 so there's that. I play PokemonGo a lot though, I actually play it on 5 accounts!

Oh man, I had tons of 40s, a couple 80s and a lone 100 series! I really miss them but seeing current prices I'm shocked at how costly they've gotten! This is pretty awesome to see, I haven't even thought about much less researched new ones!
Anything that old is always going to come down to condition, records, deferred maintenance and so on.
