    Discuss: DIY Rust Proofing Options

Eastwood has a new rust encapsulator (platinum) that seems similar to POR15, also hydro cured. Maybe less prep, not cheap at $60/qt but I'm going to give that a shot. I'm not sure on converters first if that's a better route, i.e. spraying them where you may not be able to reach with the paint...

Opinions on rust / frame condition

I have two questions on frame repair that I can't find an answer to, both are related to structural integrity, especially when under the truck: 1) When cutting out bad portions of the frame to rebuild them, how much can you cut out before you run the risk of a failure? Or at least enough bend...

Opinions on rust / frame condition

The good news for today: The battery clamps returned my tranny skid to an unrusted condition: And the gas skid came off, albeit with a bit of a fight -- rear bolt by the tire snapped off with the dewalt impact, and the outside center bolt by the running board rounded off and needed 20...

Opinions on rust / frame condition

It rained and was miserable all day so didn't do much. I blasted the gas skid bolts with Kroil, coming off tomorrow one way or another. Tranny skid came off and is taking a swim in the tank just so I felt like I did something. Skids are off And I’m working on a larger electrolysis tank that...

Opinions on rust / frame condition

Yeah well my DD gets 11mpg with 700hp and 12psi of boost and I own 6 boats so I’m not one to make practical decisions on ‘investments’

I'm going your method -- I have some eastwood internal coating so will spray that but I'm going to blast anything internal with FF also

Frozen front sway bar mount nut

A torch 6 inches from your face isnt fun but heat is just great -- 60-90secs and got a few turns out of it, and some vaporized PB at the same time, before it locked on the rusty threads above and snapped. Bracket off without filling my swear jar and losing a Saturday with a spun bolt head.....

Opinions on rust / frame condition

Just so I don’t look completely nuts I showed the worst of it above — this truck rusted in a strange pattern. Maybe because it sat idle for most of the time idk, but the usual problem spot — rear lca bracket I can bang with a hammer Rocker area seems OK, I need to remove the trim to be sure...

Frozen front sway bar mount nut

What bushings did you go with? I was looking for the energy w zerks but they don't seem to exist anymore?

Frozen front sway bar mount nut

Would it help to hit the bracket from the bottom with the torch until red hot? maybe that would heat the post enough to get it to move (or snap off)?I dont give a crap about the bracket I just don't need a rounded nut I can't see or access....

    Brake rebuild vs Tundra upgrade

Agree with that also, I went OEM rotors for that reason. They are solid and worth the cost. Bedding the pads properly helps a lot also.

    Brake rebuild vs Tundra upgrade

if you are doing any towing or mountain driving I'd go for the TBU, if you work at it you can do it cheap rebuilding some junkyard calipers, and you probably need new rotors anyway if they are already shuddering like they usually do...that said I don't have any experience trying to rebuild 3rd...
