How does the connector to the vent come off? It looks like you need to squeeze it with some pliers and pull it off.

P0442 w/ fuel smell at rear of the 4Runner

This is exactly the same issue I am having on our 2001. Question - can you see the fuel tank check valve from the access port under the rear seat (driver's side)?
